Hanukkah Day 3 – There are Over 700 Strains of Cannabis

We’re celebrating Hanukkah with 8 gifts of cannabis knowledge – a new one every day!

Not all cannabis is the same. And even with particular types, say a THC-dominant one, there are dramatic differences in the effect. This has to do with the strains, of which there are 3 general categories: indica, sativa or hybrids, but in those categories there are over 700 known strains.

Indica

Generally speaking, these strains tend to have physical effects that are felt more in the body. It’s perfect for those looking for relief from aches and pains or muscle spasms. Indica is relaxing and can help alleviate restless sleep or insomnia. It has aromas of earth and skunk (musky) as well as sweet or sugary fruit smells.

Sativa

These strains tend to have stimulating mental effects. It’s for those looking for a more cerebral or upbeat experience. This energizing effect can benefit conditions like depression and fatigue. It can increase laughter and cause lights, music, and motion to appear more vibrant and intense. There is a pungent smell of pine and sometimes fruit or earthy aromas, often with an undertone reminiscent of diesel fuel.

Hybrids

These are the most common strains and take elements from both Indica and Sativa. Most hybrid strains are dominant in one or the other. Because the composition can vary, it is difficult to provide a general description of the effect. It’s useful to go to hybrids when you want the effects of cannabis without too much stimulation or sedation.

Each cannabis strain has a different concentration of the cannabinoids tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD), as well as other compounds. Here are just some examples:

  • ACDC is a Sativa Hybrid with a low THC and high CBD ratio. Its terpenes are typically Beta-Caryophyllene, Linalool, Beta-Myrcene, Alpha-Pinene, and D-Limonene.
  • Grandaddy Purple is an Indica strain with a high THC to low CBD ratio. The terpenes are generally Beta-Myrcene, Linalool, and Alpha-Pinene.
  • Harlequin is another Sativa Hybrid with a fairly even THC to CBD ratio. Its terpenes are Linalool, Beta-Myrcene, Alpha-Pinene, D-Limonene, and Beta-Caryophyllene.
  • OG Kush is an Indica with a high THC to low CBD ratio, and its terpenes are Aryophyllene, D-Limonene, and Beta-Myrcene.

Skywalker OG is an Indica Hybrid that is also known for a high THC to low CBD ratio. Its terpenes are generally D-Limonene, Beta-Caryophyllene, and Linalool.
