Whether you have already tried CBD, or are thinking of giving it a try, you may have come across products labeled as “Full Spectrum”. Products that are not full spectrum may be missing this labeling or they may say “isolate”. There is a big difference in how full spectrum products work and how they will make you feel so Three Wells thought it was important to explore what they are and whether they are worth trying. Especially considering that full spectrum products can be more expensive.

What is full spectrum CBD and what does full spectrum CBD mean?

CBD, or cannabidiol, can be confusing at first glance, so let’s break it down a little.

There are few different types of beneficial compounds in the Cannabis plant.

  • Terpenes are the molecules that give plants their aromas. They can have therapeutic benefits just as lavender has a calming effect
  • Flavonoids- More than 20 different flavonoids are found in cannabis. Like terpenes, they have therapeutic effects and have anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and neuroprotective properties. Studies show that the flavonoids in cannabis can reduce inflammation and calm cancer cells or repair damaged neurons.

Full-spectrum CBD products are called “full spectrum” because they contain a variety of the cannabinoids listed above and more. In other words, it has the full spectrum cannabinoids versus an “isolate” which has only CBD or a very narrow number of other cannabinoids.

It’s important to note that, while full spectrum CBD has THC in it, in the vast majority of products it’s not enough to get you “high” but if you have to take drug tests the THC may show up in the results.

What is the entourage effect?

To understand the benefits of Full Spectrum CBD, its important to understand the entourage effect.

The entourage effect means that CBD works in combination with the other cannabinoids like CBN, THC and terpenes to deliver better results than if the CBD was to work alone as an isolate. The more of these other compounds there are in a product, the better CBD’s effects will be on your body and mind. This is because they all work together synergistically to create a balanced endocannabinoid system (ECS) within our bodies. Basically what this means is that while any one cannabinoid may not have strong enough effects by itself, working together can lead to very powerful results!

Where does full spectrum CBD come from?

It’s a common misconception that hemp and marijuana plants are the same, but they are actually quite different. Both hemp and marijuana come from the cannabis plant, Cannabis sativa L., which produces significant amounts of CBD.

Full-spectrum CBD comes from the hemp plant, and because hemp plants, by law, must contain less than 0.3% THC you don’t need to worry that these products will get you “high.”

While the government does regulate hemp-derived CBD products for purity, it is legal to purchase them online or at local retail stores with no prescription required.

What is the difference between isolate CBD vs. full spectrum CBD?

The difference between CBD isolate and full-spectrum CBD boils down to a difference in purity.

CBD isolate is a pure form of CBD that is not combined with other cannabinoids. In short, an Isolate CBD will usually have the CBD molecule by itself. This is done by isolating the CBD during the extraction process.

On the other hand, a full-spectrum product has all 100+ cannabinoids naturally occurring in hemp plants which will include traces amounts of THC (the compound known for causing psychoactivity). However, being so low in THC means that there is no way you’ll experience any psychoactive effects!

Is full spectrum CBD the same as broad spectrum CBD?

Full-spectrum cannabidiol (CBD) and CBD Broad-spectrum are different products that have different concentrations and ratios. This affects the benefits you get from them. The concentration refers to how much CBD the product contains as a percentage, while the ratio deals with how much CBD is in a product in relation to the other substances substances in the product.

Broad-spectrum CBD contains a range of naturally occurring compounds and is typically free of THC.

Why would you take a full spectrum CBD instead of an isolate CBD?

Full spectrum takes full advantage of the entourage effect while CBD isolate cannot take advantage of the entourage effect because the other beneficial cannabinoids have been removed. Because an isolate doesn’t have the other compounds to help it to help you it may not be as effective. Also, you usually have to take a lot more CBD isolate to get the same effects as full spectrum CBD. This can mean more doses, larger dosing and can be more costly since you have to buy more to get the results you’re looking for.

What is full spectrum CBD used for?

Some people prefer Full Spectrum CBD due to its diverse range of health benefits. Also, Full Spectrum CBD has a much higher potency because it contains all the beneficial cannabinoids and terpenes we mentioned previously.

So you’re looking to give full spectrum CBD a try! Here are some of the conditions that CBD is often used to help with:

Anti-seizure – Full Spectrum CBD may help those who suffer from seizures. It has been said that CBD can reduce the frequency of seizures by a staggering 39%.

Muscle spasm relief: Using Full Spectrum CBDl to manage muscle spasms may be an effective alternative. It may help with the pain and spasms associated with FM (fibromyalgia).

Anti-anxiety: Study shows that taking Full Spectrum CBD may help those struggling with anxiety. It may help to alleviate some of the debilitating symptoms without side effects. Research has shown that CBD may also prevent the onset of anxiety.

Pain relief: Research suggests that CBD may provide relief for people suffering from chronic pain. Whether you are struggling with arthritis or injury-related pain, CBD offers a natural way to manage the inflammation and discomfort without side effects.

Treatment for psychotic disorders – Cannabidiol (CBD) may help treat patients with schizophrenia. A study showed that CBD can help to improve the symptoms of schizophrenics, including problems with delusions.

Anti-inflammatory: A study showed that CBD is a natural way to help treat arthritis and other inflammatory conditions.

What potential issues could I have by taking a full spectrum CBD?

  • Risk of Failing A Drug Test

CBD products that contain trace amounts of THC are the most common reason for failed CBD drug tests. Full-Spectrum CBD has a small amount of THC which isn’t enough to have an intoxicating effect but enough to show up on the test.

  • Potential Issues with Sensitivity to THC

Depending on your experience with cannabis, the effects of a full spectrum CBD may be more intense for you than others. For many this is an advantage, but if you are working, driving, or doing anything that requires higher levels of concentration a full spectrum CBD may not be the best treatment option. An isolate may be better in those situations or waiting to take your full spectrum CBD after times requiring high concentration.

What are the different ways you can take full spectrum CBD?

Full Spectrum CBD can come in many forms, including edibles, topicals, oils and tinctures. The main difference between these is how they are used.

  • CBD Tinctures

CBD is usually put into tinctures that contain alcohol and vegetable glycerin. The CBD can also be mixed with other liquids, like water or juice to make it easier for the body to absorb CBD.

The tincture route is a great option for those who are new to using CBD products because you just take drops under your tongue and it’s easier to know exactly how much you are taking.

  • CBD Capsules

Gel capsules are an excellent option for those who don’t want to taste the CBD but they’re more expensive than tinctures and usually need to be taken twice a day. It also takes longer for the CBD to become active in your system because it has to go through your digestive system first before getting into your bloodstream; your digestive system reduces the amount of CBD that actually makes it into your bloodstream.

  • CBD Skin Care

The most important thing to know about taking care of your skin with CBD hemp products is that they’re 100% natural! This means there shouldn’t be any harsh chemicals or irritants in these products. Not to mention, this also means those who have acne-prone skin (or sensitive skin) may avoid inflammatory responses such as redness or breakouts.

How does Full Spectrum CBD make you feel?

CBD may make you feel calm and relaxed or energized and focused, depending on what you need. Some people find that CBD products help them sleep better at night, which is an especially useful benefit for those with chronic conditions, like pain, that keeps them awake at night.

Many CBD users say they feel something like an increase in their overall sense of well-being. Extensive research into the effects of CBD has shown its potential as a mood stabilizer, anxiety reliever and for the treatment of certain psychological disorders.

How to choose a high-quality full-spectrum CBD

In order to choose a quality full-spectrum CBD product, you should look for products that meet specific criteria like:

  • Made by a company that offers third-party testing from an ISO 17025-compliant lab
  • Made with U.S. or Canadian grown hemp
  • Make sure it contains no more than 0.3% THC
  • Have the COA (certificate of analysis) that ensures the full-spectrum CBD passes leading safety standards for pesticides, heavy metals and molds

It’s also a good idea to read the label and ingredient list closely. Full-spectrum CBD doesn’t require a prescription, but when considering taking it you should talk to your doctor or healthcare professional first so that they can give you trained medical advise that’s specific to your needs.
